YOU WILL FIND A CHART OF RATES
USED IN NUMEROUS CITIES AROUND THE COUNTRY BY CLICKING HERE:
Local Rates for the meter: INITIAL "FLAG DROP" FEE $_____________ , PER MILE RATE $_____________
FRACTION OF A MILE INCREMENT USED: 1/10, 1/9, 1/8, 1/7, 1/6, 1/5, 1/4, _______, (circle one)
EXTRAS (FLAT FEE, IF USED) $ _____________ WAITING CHARGE PER HOUR
$____________
The "Drop Fee" is the initial amount of money,
that appears immediately when you turn the meter on. Old mechanical
meters were
started
by pulling a handle that looked like a mailbox flag, so the term "FLAG DROP"
became popular.
The handles are gone, but not the term
"FLAG DROP FEE". The usual drop fee runs between $1.50 and $2.50
depending upon
your market area, with the mileage fee in the range
of $1.50 to $2.25. For a chart of typical rates , click
here. Of course, your local market level, opposition rates (what do other
local cabs charge?) and limits of the law
and perhaps local regulations
will help you set these numbers. The fraction is the distance
such as 1/10 mile which
you will travel before the money increments. If you
charge $2.00 per mile and you choose 1/10 mile increment,
every time you have gone 1/10th mile, the meter will add 20-cents to the fare.
Extras is a flat fee charged to recover
fees you must pay,
such as toll bridges, airport line fees, or one way-trip charges. Suppose you
have a military base 58
miles away, and you frequently take
soldiers there and come back empty. You might have EXTRAS set for $8.00 to help
recover the gasoline for the return trip. Waiting time
is what you collect while waiting for the client when he says,
"Stop here for a
moment, and leave the meter running." Maybe $20.00 or $30.00 per hour.

HIRED TURNS THE METER ON AND OFF, TIME OFF STOPS THE
METER FROM CHARGING WHILE YOU ARE WAITING, OR TURNS IT
BACK ON TO CHARGE TIME FEES, EXTRAS CHARGES THE FLAT RATE FEE FOR SPECIAL
CIRCUMSTANCES (SEE ABOVE), AND RATE
SELECTS THE RATE TO BE USED. YOU CAN HAVE UP TO EIGHT DIFFERENT RATES IN YOUR
METER, AS MIGHT BE REQUIRED FOR
SPECIAL RATES REQUIRED IN A CITY OR PARTICULAR ZONE.
